Bastille Day 2012 saw political action across New Zealand as communities marched in the main cities against the Government’s intention to sell off public assets.<\/p>\n
So don’t the New Zealand public feel that floating the assets will give them a chance at ownership that they otherwise wouldn’t get?<\/p>\n
The Labour Party were out in force canvassing signatures on a national cross-party petition to try and stop the Government in its tracks. Although a Bill passed by just one vote at the end of June does allow the sell off of several public energy companies, the petition, if it reaches 300,000 signatures, will force a referendum on the subject.<\/p>\n
With Maori putting another spoke in the wheels of asset commerce this week by protesting that sale of electricity companies infringe Treaty water rights, John Key has certainly got some headaches at the moment.<\/p>\n
The Bastille protesters have got a time-honoured solution for that.<\/p>\n
