“Co-ordinate VI 2019″ – highly tensioned steel bars dissect the galleries as a ‘perceptual location device”.<\/p><\/div>\n

Antony Gormley at the Royal Academy was packed when ANM visited.\u00a0The gallery is undoubtedly receiving eye watering amounts of money judging by the crowds. But it’s got to cover, not just the visible, but the years’ long preparation for the massive scale exhibits.<\/p>\n

These have involved stunts such as tanking a whole gallery over the parquet floor to allow the installation of clay and seawater that is \u201cHost<\/strong><\/em>\u201d. The water-filled room embodies \u201cthe raw conditions in which life might <\/em>emerge, a kind of primordial soup of matter, space and time<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Antony Gormley 2019 \u00a0is almost completely accessible, with only the inside of \u201cCave 2019<\/strong><\/em>\u201d, being totally out of bounds to wheelchair users.<\/p>\n

This architectural scale sculpture is, viewed from above, a representation of a human form, the body \u201ctransformed into a collapsed architecture<\/em>\u201d, contrasting with the geometry and refinement of the gallery space. \"\"<\/a>Scale continues to overwhelm with the playful , flexible, pinging coils of tube to step through and marvel at that is “Clearing VII 2019″<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

About 8 kilometres of square section aluminium tube, allowed to expand until it meets the floor, walls and ceiling to make what Gormley calls a “drawing in space”.<\/p>\n

“Body and Fruit”<\/em> <\/strong>continues the series “Expansion Works”, “expanded body zones” cast in iron, hanging deliciously low in the domed gallery.<\/p>\n

In another gallery the ceiling had to be gradually rebuilt with strengthening to withhold the suspended metal cages of \u201cMatrix III 2019<\/strong><\/em>\u201d just over the heads of visitors.<\/p>\n

Gormley describes this \u201ccloud<\/em>\u201d of metal (98% recycled) as \u201cthe ghost of the environment we\u2019ve all chosen to accept as our primary habitat<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n

The structural work has been accomplished bit by bit, over the preceding two years, fitted in between other exhibitions. The matrix metal boxes contain a small modern room sized space in the centre.<\/p>\n
